Newsletter – November 16, 2021

Hello Members,

We are rapidly nearing the start of the 2021-22 season and all areas of the club are well underway with planning for the season.

We are excited to rebrand the e-newsletter ‘the Haven’. The pre-Christmas and pre-Easter publications will no longer be produced in the previous format. All updates will be via the website, e-newsletter, email, social channels and Team App (more info to come on this one).

I was delighted to interview eight outstanding under 13 Nippers with Liam O’Callaghan for the new roles of Nipper Club Captains. We were blown away with the caliber of these young members and have decided to form a first ever Nippers Leadership Group.

Congratulations to our new Nipper Club Captains – Bridget Sherry and Sidney Johns and to the Nippers Leadership Group:

In this edition you will find updates covering:

COVID-19 and Vaccinations

A reminder that to attend the club facilities or participate in club or LSV activities that anyone aged 16 years and older involved with any of our services, programs, activities and/or events must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless an exemption applies.

Members aged 12 years and above who are completing their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), Bronze Medallion (BM) or participating in lifesaving patrols are considered a worker, and therefore must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate.

LSV are requesting that every member complete and submit a COVID-19 vaccination status form. The form is short and can be accessed via smart phone.

Go to:

If you are unable to access the form, you can send a photo of your vaccination certificate to Nicole at [email protected]. Nicole will record your vaccination status as complete and then delete the photo.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available. If you have any questions, please get in touch at [email protected].

Lifesaving Operations

During the off-season, the IRB room was refitted with new IRB racks to better store the IRB hulls and motors. Additionally, new cupboards were installed to allow for a more functional space and more accessible and organised storage of our IRB equipment.

IRB Equipment

Patrols start on Saturday 27 November.

The 2021-22 patrol roster and FALCON teams have been finalised. Please navigate to the ‘Patrols’ tab on the Fairhaven SLSC website to view the 2021-22 patrol roster, FALCON teams and Active member patrol signup sheet for the season.

Active members who are not listed in a FALCON team should roster themselves on to any of the dates listed to complete their 16 hours. Please note, this sheet is for non-FALCON patrol members only. If you are not a FALCON member and would like to become one, please contact Liam at [email protected].

FALCON members, please ensure you familiarise yourselves with the ‘FALCON fact sheet’ and the expectations of a FALCON member.

Prior to each season, all gear must be cleared for operational use. Any members who have borrowed equipment for personal use during the off-season, need to return items to the club. Could you please contact Jacqui at [email protected] if you are in possession of any patrol equipment such as rescue boards or tubes.

Pre-Season Patrol Leaders Briefing

On Thursday 18 November at 6:30pm the operations team will lead a Patrol Leaders briefing via zoom to prepare teams for the season ahead. The meeting will cover the season ahead, COVID safety on patrol, expectations, response capability, club interoperability, critical incidents, command and control.

Please save the date in your calendars. A link to the meeting will be distributed closer to the date. It is important that all Patrol leaders and FALCON members attend. Active patrolling members are also welcome.

E-ROADS: Emergency Response Vehicle Usage

This season, we will have an E-Roads system installed in the emergency response vehicle (the Ranger) which means each member who uses the vehicle will be required to sign in with a personal account each time they drive.

Those frequently using the vehicle will mostly be patrol leaders, the training and assessment team and those who require the vehicle for sports or other transporting of equipment.

If you fall within this category, could you please email a copy of your driver’s licence to Nicole at [email protected] at your earliest convenience for your account to be created. An account will be set up in your name with each member’s login pin being the last 4 digits of their driver’s licence number.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the operations team.

After School Nippers

We are delighted to get the after-school Nippers program up and running and were back on the beach on Thursday the 4 November with 20 nippers keen to get wet.

With wet and miserable weather earlier in the week, we were pleasantly surprised with sunshine and great water conditions to ease everyone back in. Although the water was fresh, there was no stopping the kids.

Thanks to Julia Clarke for getting the program up and running, Mark Riddell for leading the water activities, Mal Freake for braving the chilly conditions and bringing up the water safety numbers, Luke Wakeman and Dean Lewis for their extra support in the water and all the other parents for their assistance.

We started the session remembering some safety aspects like being sun smart, wearing high vis and reading the water before entering. We practiced some basic signals so we could communicate over the wind and the waves, did a traditional jog and warmups to get in the mood and then we hit the water with wading, swimming and boards. The Nipper’s skills and confidence showing through their excitement and smiles.

Nipper Club Captains

We are delighted to announce the new Nipper Club Captains, Bridget Sherry and Sidney Johns.

We were blown away with the caliber of these young members and have formed a first ever Nippers Leadership Group.

We will bring the Captains and the Leadership Group together before the Season commences (on Zoom) to chat through the Nippers program.

During the first few days of Nippers, we will get the Captains and Leadership Group together to talk about; their ideas for Nippers, involvement in the upcoming carnivals and some training pathways with Life Saving Victoria to provide them with other leadership opportunities.

During the season, the Nipper Captains and Leadership Group will act as buddies for the younger nippers, assist with some warmup games before the program starts at 10am and have some afternoon “play dates’ with games and activities. These play dates will be a fantastic opportunity for nippers from different age groups to mix and get to know each other.

A huge thanks to Tanya Singleton and Mel Vallence for introducing this wonderful initiative and opportunity for our young members. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Tanya and Mel at [email protected].
