Newsletter – May 2022

Hello Members,

Well, that’s a wrap! The patrol flags have been put away for the 2021/22 season. It’s been a long season, with lots of challenges thrown our way, and a good time to reflect on some fabulous milestones achieved.

It’s hard to believe at the start of the season we were still trying to understand the Covid restrictions and how we could patrol, run Nippers and training programs and open the bar and meals. Whilst we had to cancel and modify a few events and programs, it has been great to have our members in and around the club and participating in programs and events in mostly normal circumstances.

A big thank you to all our active members for their commitment throughout the season in all types of weather and beach conditions…the continuous easterlies were ruthless! Your dedication is greatly appreciated.

Annual General Meeting

In this edition we highlight Andy Thomas’ 25 years of patrol service, look at the season patrol statistics, club championships wrap up, LSV updates and information from the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority.

Congratulations Andy on 25 Years Patrol Service

We said farewell to Andy Thomas from active patrolling duties on Saturday 16 April 2022.

Andy joined the club as an associate member in the 1993/94 season and gained his Bronze Medallion in March 1997. During Andy’s 25 years of patrolling service, he has won the Best Active Member and the Best Patrol 7 times!

During his patrol career, Andy had two hip replacements and a stress fractured foot and has somehow always managed to get through requal!

Andy Thomas

Andy lists his highlights as:

  • Patrolling with his two sons for a number of years (Dave and Phil)
  • Being part of a close knit patrol group for a number of years – always looking forward to catching up with fellow patrol members at the beginning of each season
  • Sneaking off for a cheeky surf as beach and swimmer conditions allowed!

Being an active member and patrolling at Fairhaven is very rewarding, however the reason we are there is to keep the beach goers safe. During his time on patrol, Andy has attended three serious incidents and we thank him for his unfailing efforts during these incidents.

Congratulations Andy, 25 years patrolling is a significant achievement, and thank you for your outstanding contribution in the red and yellow.

Club Championships

Sunshine, a light easterly wind and clean swell was the setting for the Club Championships held on Easter Saturday. Whilst numbers may have been smaller due to the reschedule from January, there we lots of smiles and energy and the competition was fierce across events and age groups.

Congratulations to all who participated, and thanks to Cutch, Tanya, Mel, Julia, Darce for officiating and all the supporters!
