Newsletter – March / April 2022

Hello Members,

Easter and the school holidays have arrived, and fingers crossed, the sunshine stays!

I have been fortunate to spend this week on the Gold Coast at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships ‘the Aussies’. It has been an awesome week with our small and dedicated team, competing in beach and surf boat events. Competition is an important element of club life. We have a strong junior team so the challenge is to create pathways so these kids can transition with confidence to the senior team. Surf lifesaving competition is broad and includes summer sports in the water and on the sand, IRB racing and pool rescue.

Our active patrolling members continue to patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays. A huge thank you to all patrolling members, the last patrol of the season is Monday 25 April 2022.

Unfortunately, the Fairhaven Ladies Lunch will not go ahead this season. We will refund all tickets and will see you all in January 2023.

A big congratulations and best wishes to Tess Rice and Alex Buckley who celebrated their wedding at Fairhaven last weekend.

In this edition we highlight what’s happening at the club over Easter, sport results after school nippers and some LSV updates.

Australian Championships

A small team of competitors and families travelled to the Gold Coast for the Aussies and achieved some fantastic results.

Aussies 2022 marked 60 years since Malcom Freake competed in his first Aussies and he is still going strong in the beach events.

Arno D’Andrea competed in his first Aussies and let everyone know Fairhaven was one to watch! Arno achieved a Bronze Medal in the U17 Beach Sprint, and 11th place in the U17 Beach Flags. The Australian Championships Bronze medal is a first for Fairhaven in Open competition in beach events. Outstanding achievements from Arno in a hot field of 50 U17 competitors from around Australia. We are so proud of you Arno!

Arno D’Andrea

In the master’s competition, the Women’s Surf Boat crew battled the challenging surf conditions and finished with a Bronze medal…a sensational achievement!

A big thanks to Thomo for filling the Team Manager role and its always great to have a friendly official in the beach area…thanks Cutch!

The Aussies are in Perth next year 25 March to 2 April 2023.

After School Nippers

The after school nippers celebrated the end of another amazing season on Sunday 3 April, with dinner at the surf club. With great food and great company, it was the perfect way to end the season. Although conditions and weather are often not on our side, we are so lucky to be able to continue to build water confidence, skills and friendships. The nippers have grown so much over the season with encouragement from the whole team.

I hear poison ball in the water was a genius idea from Mark and a huge hit with the kids. Not only do they need to keep an eye on the ball but also on the waves. Everyone has so much fun, they forget the nerves they may have had about the waves.

Thanks to Julia Clarke for coordinating this valuable program and to all the parents who helped make the season happen. Especially Mark Riddell with his amazing water skills, Luke Wakeman AGM (assisted by Bern), water safety (Karen, Stewart, Jono, Jo, Nick, Mark, Julia, Kate, Mal & Thommo). It has been great having past nippers come back and help either as water safety or assistant AGM – thanks Hanna, Billy and Grace.

A few parents are keen to gain the Bronze Medallion, so if you are interested, please let us know. Enjoy the break over the cooler terms and we’ll see you all back in term 4.
