Newsletter – March 22, 2020

Dear Members,

Greetings in these strange and unsettling times for all.

I am sure your inbox has been inundated with COVID 19 updates so I will keep this one brief.

The Committee of Fairhaven SLSC met last Tuesday and discussed a number of issues relevant to the current situation and our club.

In collaboration with Lifesaving Victoria – the following is a summary of where we are up to at the present time.

Patrols

In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, Life Saving Victoria has held a number of meetings and published corresponding public notices to establish a consistent response to the risk of transmission. These recommendations have resulted in all non-essential gatherings, events and services being cancelled or postponed.

At this point in time, the decision in relation to patrols and operational life saving services is that they will continue as normal – as such, our obligation to provide a qualified full patrol remains in place. Additional protective measures will be introduced, including the use of P2 protective face masks and an increase in the frequency of hand-washing procedures for patrolling members.

Life Saving Victoria has worked with Ambulance Victoria to establish a First Responder Checklist that will assist in mitigating the risk to patrolling members:

Fairhaven SLSC will also no longer be providing lunches for patrolling members on full day patrols. Although this is unfortunate, minimising person-to-person contact is essential in this challenging time.

Most importantly, if you are ill, have returned from an overseas trip within 14 days of the patrol, have been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case, or you have a pre-existing health condition do not attend.

We also want to stress that attendance at patrol is entirely voluntary given the present circumstance – please get in touch if you have any concerns and we will do our absolute best to find a solution.

If a patrol is looking as though it will be short on numbers, please contact us immediately so that we can be proactive in satisfying Fairhaven’s patrol protocol moving forward.

We are always appreciative of the time and commitment of our active members, however I think that the entire Fairhaven SLSC community would agree that this gratitude reaches new heights during these incredibly testing times. Thank you for your service, and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to call or email Michael Henderson, Alex Buckley, Jacqui Dreher or Maddy Green.

Female Leadership Network – International Womens Day

On a brighter note, Fairhaven was very well represented at a recent breakfast run by LSV Female Leadership Network on International Womens Day.

This is an excellent function to celebrate and recognize female contribution to the Surf Life Saving movement.

Fairhaven members Trish Morgan and Eve Lardner were officially recognised by LSV for their excellent and long standing contributions.

Happy Birthday Glad Nutbean!

Original member of the Fairhaven Ladies Auxiliary, long standing member and wife of founding President George Nutbean, Gladys Nutbean recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

The Nutbean family name is synonymous with Fairhaven SLSC.

This was featured in a number of news outlets and Fairhaven SLSC passed on our congratulations to Gladys via a birthday card.
