The Christmas calendar for 2017 make our patrolling commitments slightly difficult for Sat 23 Dec and Sun 24 Dec.
To our local active members, or those lucky enough to be at the Haven pre Xmas, please consider doing a voluntary Patrol on either of those days:
- Sat 23rd Dec 1.30pm-4.30pm
- Sun 24th Dec 10am-4pm
- Mon 25th Dec 10am-4pm (Observational Patrol)
For more information, email our Club Captain Michael Henderson at [email protected].
Bronze Camp Wrap
Our annual residential Bronze Camp ran from the 10th-16th December and was a great success.
This is an important strategic event for the club with over 50 new bronze medallion holders being welcomed to Fairhaven SLSC.
In addition, approximately 30 existing members trained for their Silver award which includes First Aid and Advanced Resuscitation awards.
A big thanks to Laura Buckley, Liam O Callaghan and Alex Schwarcz for their organisation, planning and leadership of the camp.
Also, thanks to the IRB drivers/water safety/bus drivers and instructors who all volunteer their time to make it a great event and fantastic induction into the Fairhaven culture for our new members.
Special thanks to Angus and Julie from Angahook Holiday camp who go out of their way to accomodate the unique needs of the camp and feed the hungry masses.
One highlight for all was a visit from the Westpac Helicopter and a simulated rescue at Fairhaven beach.
We welcome and congratulate our new award members and hope they have a long association with Fairhaven.

The Haven Classic 2017
Wow, wow, wow! What an amazing day. The inaugural Haven Classic was held on Saturday 16th December exceeding all expectations and blowing minds right across the ocean paddling community. The weather – perfect, the surf – perfect, the atmosphere – electric, the wind – well, almost perfect.
The 13km ocean paddle from Lorne to Fairhaven saw 93 competitors (4 from NSW) take to the water on all matter of ocean craft. Ocean skis, surf skis, prone paddleboards, SUPs, a foil board and the crowd favourite, a SUPsquatch 6 man inflatable SUP.
You could not wipe the smiles off the faces of the competitors, volunteers and spectators who were all lucky enough to experience one of those magical Fairhaven days.
World no. 8 ranked SUP paddler James Casey from NSW glided across the ocean on his foil board to reach Fairhaven in an incredible winning time of just 54 minutes.
It was great to see so many athletes stick around to enjoy our spectacular Sunset Bar, which was in full swing with the usual cold beer, great food and a live band.
We can’t thank our 45 volunteers enough for their contribution towards this wonderful event. Special mention goes out to our water safety team, led by Alex Buckley, who showed just how skilled and professional we are as a Surf Life Saving Club. We had endless comments from competitors about how safe they felt out there.
We have been inundated with texts, emails and social media posts from people who have nothing but positive feedback for the event and our surf club. Here are a few of examples:
“The brainchild of ocean paddlers Cheyne Mitchell and Brad Cummins, this event was pulled off to perfection. As with many other multi-paddle events, it was great to see such a diversity of craft and age groups on the water. Amazing course, amazing venue [the Sunset Bar lived up to it’s name], brilliant water safety and a smashing after-party complete with a rocking band and lots of dancing! Now that’s how to run a feel-good event!” – Warwick lee
“Terrific event in every aspect. A must for any paddler who is after a great challenge. Well done Cheyne and Brad for a top effort in organising the Haven Classic and putting Victoria on the map for World Class events.” – Michael Jenkins
“Absolutely brilliant run event… hats off to Brad Cummins and Cheyne Mitchell for all their hard work, time and effort and to the Fairhaven SLSC for their magnificent venue” – Sharon Bourke
Lastly, we’d like to thank Darren West and the FSLSC Committee who took a punt in supporting this event, allowing us to get this off the ground and showcase what a fantastic community club we are.
For all event photos go to our Facebook page ‘The Haven Classic’.
We can’t wait to do it all again in 2018!!

The Haven Classic Event Directors
Fairhaven has been selected to host the Life Saving Victoria Senior Carnival and the Ocean 6 Competition (formerly the Nutri-Grain Iron Man Competition) which are being held concurrently at Fairhaven on Sunday 14th January 2018. We’re expecting 550 competitors and plenty of action.
The club is responsible for organising the logistics on the day and needs your help with traffic control, bus driving, cooking on the BBQ, keeping our beach tidy and a range of other tasks.
Thursday 28th December at 2pm
It’s too late to start training but this event is an excellent way to blow out some Christmas excess and the good news is that the mighty Painkalac is full!
60th Anniversary Function
We have decided that the 60th Anniversary of FSLSC is too important a birthday to let slip by without celebrating!
Saturday 24th February 2018
Please save the date. More details to follow regarding tickets and format.
Our important annual fund raiser will again be held on January 1 from 4pm.
Many hands make light work for all – in particular, we always need more adult/car drivers to help cover the territory with Door Knockers – see you there!
Post Xmas Awards
Our very capable and dedicated Training and Assessment team are offering a number of awards for our members to complete after Xmas.
The Post-Christmas Bronze Squad runs alongside our SRC program during the summer period following Christmas, around the same time as the Fairhaven Nipper program. The Bronze Medallion is for anyone aged 15 years+.

Candidate Info packs with greater course and payment detail will be sent out closer to the time.
In the meantime if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send an email to our Training and Assessment team at [email protected].

IRB Crew and Driver Training
This season we are looking to train 4-5 Nipper parents, friends or siblings in IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) driving and crewing. People who complete these awards will be asked to help as water safety at Nippers sessions and events over the next few years. It is necessary to complete IRB crew before IRB driver.
IRB crew and driver are fun and challenging courses, and are highly valued at Fairhaven Nippers. Please register interest by emailing your details to [email protected]. Training preference will be given to people who will be involved in Nippers for a few seasons.
With a growing Sports/Competition team, Fairhaven SLSC would like to increase the current number of junior and senior sports officials.
SLSA have introduced a new system of accreditation starting with the entry level being called “Core Officials.”
Fairhaven SLSC would like to conduct this entry level course and we require 6-10 persons to sign up for the course. The theory component is on line, then a practical assessment can be organised at the club during a nipper session using the various discipline courses. Once the assessment is completed, then you are able to start officiating at carnivals.
Our aging numbers of officials needs to be revamped. If you are keen to be involved and become an Official, please contact Cutch on 0418 560 310 and all the information will be passed on to you.
Fairhaven SLSC Merchandise
Orders are open NOW and if ordered between now and 7 January, goods will be shipped on January 8.
The merchandise shop will be open at the clubhouse during Nipper sessions over the 2017/2018 season however, the range available at the clubhouse is not as extensive as that online. Only limited styles, colours and sizes will be available at the club.
We would like to advise that Rugby Jumpers and a Limited Edition 60 year cap will be available at the clubhouse this summer. So do come and purchase those directly.
We have worked with Ghanda for many years and they are pleased to be working with us on this online shop. This also means that sizing will be the same as last summer (and summers previous) as all clothing will be supplied by Ghanda.
