Newsletter – August 7, 2019

Dear Members,

Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter. As our AGM approaches, it is time to cast our mind forward to some warmer weather and good times at the Haven!

Membership renewals will be forwarded to members throughout September – look out for that in your inbox.

Active members – stay fit and healthy – maybe even hit the pool once or twice! We will be in touch over the next month or 2 with a list of dates for requalification and patrols.

Summer will be here before we know it – even if it doesn’t feel like it with the next few days of weather in Victoria!

Boat Rowing – Fairhaven SLSC

Boat Rowing training is getting under way for a number of our crews for the forthcoming season.

The club is always looking for newcomers to rowing – Juniors or Seniors – Male or Female!

We are also seeking potential sponsors for this area of the club.

We have a number of cleanskin boats ready to proudly display your logo around the coast all Summer!

Life Saving Victoria – Awards of Excellence Dinner

On Saturday 27 July 2019 the Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence were held at the Pullman Hotel in Albert Park to celebrate the achievements and successes of the 2018/19 season, and to remember the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of our fellow life savers throughout this period.

Fairhaven was strongly represented at the event, and the club is thrilled with the efforts of our very own Laura Buckley who won Assessor of the Year, as well as Gabe and John Cornwell who were part of the Victorian Pool Life Saving Team that won Team of the Year.

Further, Fairhaven members were finalists in three other awards:

  • Alex Schwarcz for Trainer of the Year
  • Jacqui Dreher for Lifeguard of the Year
  • Thomas Burt for Youth Lifesaver of the Year

Finally, Alex Schwarcz, Alex Buckley and Michael Henderson were also recognised for their rescue of two fisherman off rocks near Aireys Inlet in March.

We are exceptionally proud of all our nominees, as well as every member who contributes to Fairhaven’s success in keeping the community safe!

Fairhaven SLSC at Le Tour de France!

Great to see Fairhaven represented at the 2019 Tour de France!

The Cohen family European adventures took them to France where they were able to enjoy some magnificent cycling and scenery as well as represent the famous Fairhaven colours – broadcast around the globe!

Vale – Maureen Peterken

Our club sadly notes the recent passing of long time member Maureen Peterken.

The Peterken family have many friends at Fairhaven stemming from a long and generous involvement with the club.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Geoff and all of the Peterken family.

Annual Report Archive

We have almost completed a project to digitally store all our Annual Reports on the Club website dating back to the first from season 1958-59!

Please see the following link to access this for your interest:

Thanks to Club Historian – Keith West for collating these reports and also to members who donated or found old reports in order that we could have ownership of the complete set.

(There are a couple of reports still to be scanned – this will be completed shortly)

Thanks to all members for their ongoing support of our fantastic community club!

See you at the beach soon.

Best wishes,

Darren West
President – Fairhaven SLSC
